I wonder when these so called student unions take out rallies every time some news item makes it to the headlines, do they really do so understanding the gravity of the situation? Yesterday a girl was shot dead outside her college, and today we had one such union address the mess hall. The leader spoke against the broad daylight murder, and asked for the unconditional support of us students in ensuring that the perpetrators behind the incident get punished. Also, fingers were pointed against the media and police for making hay while the sun shines but doing nothing about it. Was he trying to say that their cause was a genuine one?
Whenever a breaking news item is reported, these unions stage protests and distribute pamphlets. Yes, to an extent it does influence and raise the curiosity level of the masses at large but does it really account for any real change? The sensationalization of breaking news has, more or less, become a habit of these budding politicians to touch base with the voters. People seem worse than vultures at times, waiting to tear the last piece of flesh off you. I find it difficult to correlate to things happening around me at times.
Also, yesterday Women's Day was celebrated the world over. Needless to say, we had yet another protest march around campus. I was riding back from the community centre, just in time to witness the march. I think such events are a load of bullshit. Had we already considered ourselves to be equal to the opposite sex, we wouldn't have felt the need to celebrate this day of womanhood. After all, do men celebrate such a day? Rather than focusing on this one day to vent out all anger and frustration, demanding for equal rights and equal treatment, I think it is time for us to treat each other and ourselves, most importantly, as equals irrespective of the status quo.
