THE IMPONDERABILIA OF EVERYDAY EXISTENCE

Home of the Snow Lions

It is both a privilege and an honour to be a part of history. Sikkim has finally made its mark in the game of football with the arrival of United Sikkim FC in the I-league.

I watched the deciding game against Mohammedan Sporting a few months back. Many like me will remember it as the day we qualified for the top league of the country. I must say the opponent goalie was a case of sour grapes. Barring his behaviour, the mood was ecstatic in the capital that day. Being football enthusiasts, it is indeed a dream come true to have a team to root for -- our home team!
Warming up for USFC versus East Bengal
Back in the days when Paljor Stadium was just a case of uneven, broken wooden seats and mud (which when combined with the monsoons almost instantly turned into slime), I would find myself seated with my mother and her friends in the prestigious VIP gallery. While pre-match the ladies showcased utmost dignity, this was followed by frequent ramblings and jeerings as soon as the game would start. Quite a few times, I have found the chief guest of the day turn around to have a look at the football fanatics who didn't mind giving a earful within seconds of each other. Now, after some fifteen years or so we have a beautiful stadium which makes pretty much everyone proud. Having seen some of the stadiums in the country, I honestly feel we are one of the better off states. Add to this, the weather and the crowd make it a worthwhile journey for many to come and play here. This is my belief.

With popular teams like Dempo and East Bengal visiting us for our home matches, this year is going to be a treat for the Sikkimese crowd. It is only fair we thank Bhaichung Bhutia for dreaming this big, and immensely grateful we are. All the best USFC. Make us proud!
