THE IMPONDERABILIA OF EVERYDAY EXISTENCE

An early morning dose

Between the two of us, my boyfriend and I, we have one thing in common. Both of us are the runners of the family. Always running around for household chores-- whether it be simple tasks like bank payments or helping/attending functions or getting things done. Basically we are the ones who are lauded for a job well done or scolded if anything is left incomplete.

This morning I got a good dose from my father. My folks are planning to make the monthly trip to our village in South Sikkim and the natural assumption is that Cyden will go. I actually knew about today’s tour since yesterday but was in two minds about it. Reason: I have a self-committed submission deadline for my dissertation i.e. the 12th and if I go ahead with my parents, I will be wasting two days in the process. So, feeling extremely nervous, I informed my Dad about the deadline and why it is not possible for me to go today. The immediate response was as such, “No problem. As it is, even if you go, you don’t help around or do anything”. I was so angry with his words. He does this every time. I wanted to ask him who drives them there and cooks lunch/dinner in the village? But no, I stopped short. My father has this habit. When he gets angry or frustrated with family, he just dismisses them off for the lamest of reasons, whether it holds any truth or not. Earlier during the week too he made a similar comment just because I hadn’t seen a movie that he had. That time his lines were “You don’t watch movies that actually make sense and teach you something worthwhile”.

Anyways, fast forwarding through all the father-daughter arguments, the matter for the day has been settled. I have requested my Aunt to go with them. Dad’s driver will be going as well so, as far as I’m concerned, my duties have been covered. Now I need to sit in my room all evening, maybe until midnight and finish editing atleast the first two chapters. Two chapters each in the next two days and then I have to sum up the conclusion.
