Why would anyone in their right minds want to molest a girl, a student at that, on the pretext of having a good time?!! Stories of India shining, India on its way to becoming a super power, India doing well in the international arena etc. hold zero significance in the light of incidents which prove that we Indians are a senseless lot. I have always had a problem with the stereotypes that our society has produced. Men are free to express their patriarchal gestures anywhere and everywhere. Society does not see this as wrong, even if questions are raised, it occupies the limelight only until the incident is shoved back into darkness. Once this happens, we go back to the beginning. So where is the growth or so called 'progress'?
Development is a strong word. In our case, why do we speak of a developing India when we Indians, the people who make up this India, are still rotting in the Vedic ages? Caste, female infanticide, dowry deaths etc. we have so many customs and rituals that push us back into the stone era. Why then do we even assume that we are capable of taking on the world powers? I am seriously angry and ashamed at the same time.
Nobody deserves to be treated the way this girl has been treated by the mob outside a certain pub in Guwahati. A few men are seen smiling in the video which has gone viral on youtube. How can you have fun at the cost of stripping someone of their dignity?!! I fail to understand the mentality of such people who think that their happiness matters the most, even if it comes at the cost of others. I really hope that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Such incidents must be followed up with full enthusiasm by the law enforcers as well as civil society at large. There is just no excuse good enough to let these social psychopaths go unpunished. Can we please, please have some justice!!!
