THE IMPONDERABILIA OF EVERYDAY EXISTENCE

July 17, 2012

Hello wildlings!

When I initially joined this University, I was miserable. Then autumn came by and I decided I was wrong. Despite the hot summer and the horrible monsoons, I began liking this place. If rumour is to be believed, spotting a Nilgai (Blue cow) on campus means you will be stuck here for a long time. Over the last two years, I have seen some 15+ Nilgais. A feat at par with those students who've managed to grow roots in their dingy hostel rooms. But I am unfettered by these spottings because most of them took place during my early morning jogs and that is the safest time for these wildlings to come out of the green cover. Three months back, I was taking the normal short cut from my hostel to the Centre which goes through a jungle. Half way to my destination, I realized I wasn't alone. Two deers were right on my tracks. Normally, I wouldn't have been scared but I spotted long, pointed horns crowned on both the animals. Trying to put up a calm front, I walked quietly until I reached the top of the rock and looked back. As if they were waiting to say goodbye to me, the two deers had locked horns and were looking at me doe-eyed. This moment lasted for about thirty seconds and then they sped away.

Today, after an exceptionally tiring struggle at the various counters for clearances, I was finally making my way back to the hostel. While fiddling with my phone, I could see a vague pipe-like figure slide past. When I finally looked at the thing in front of me, I saw the biggest adult snake making its way hurriedly downhill. This one was long and well fed, in a light tan. I did a Jess Day dance right in the middle of the road. Unfortunately, the only other pedestrian on the road had her earphones on, preferably listening to a Mallu song (and No, I am not being a racist here). After a two minute struggle with hot asphalt under the blazing sun, the snake decided to opt for dry grass and so he/she went gliding back into the wilderness. For the next hour or so, I couldn't believe what I had just seen. My time in this University has given me some rather memorable experiences to talk about. I loves!
