THE IMPONDERABILIA OF EVERYDAY EXISTENCE

Losing with dignity

We won tonight.
Not as a community.
Not as a group.
Not under a specific religious identity.
Not as a specific gender.
Not on the basis of any colour.
Not as a high or a low caste.
We won tonight as a nation.
United.

Dhoni deserved the win. His spectacular leadership and the cool with which he led the team to the title is well worth a standing ovation. But what really caught my attention tonight was the Sri Lankan captain, Kumar Sangakkara. What a gentleman! He spoke extremely well at the end of the game and the manner with which he congratulated his opponents as he left the field was rather dignified. In the world of cricket, not everyone is blessed with the gift of the gab, but he was. Those eyes are the most expressive I have seen in a long time.

Congratulations to Team India. Now the only thing I dread is the months, and possibly years, of recap that shall follow in the media. All the more reason for Sidhu to indulge in meaningless euphemisms. The final nail that buried the cricket coffin in my heart.
