THE IMPONDERABILIA OF EVERYDAY EXISTENCE

Hachiko made me cry

"For April, this is surprisingly cold".

This was my first thought as I cycled down towards my hostel from the main gate. It had rained overnight and a slight drizzle every now and then made the temperature a luxury to dwell on. I was dressed in jeans and a shirt. But I needed a sweater this morning. I was back in my room hoping to work on my term paper. The absolute disgust of a presentation I gave yesterday has made me feel like I am headed nowhere.

Instead, my Sunday morning started with a movie. Hachiko- A Dog's Story isn't a normal everyday story we hear of. I howled and exhausted my quota of tears for the next two years while watching it. I realized the mere thought of loyalty strikes a chord with me. Hachiko loves his owner and is fiercely loyal. So much so that even after the master dies, Hachiko spends the next nine years waiting for the former to walk out of the train station, where he has waited every day. It is difficult to find such loyalty in today's day and age. We go from being friends to acquaintances and from acquaintances to strangers, all within a snap of a finger.

Hachiko made me reflect today. He made me question my own loyalty. What good are we if we don't have some kindness inside us? Is mechanical emotion all that we are capable of producing? This movie is a wonderful example of faith, love, patience, respect and, ofcourse, loyalty. This post is dedicated to the handsome dog who made me cry first thing in the morning. Hachiko.
