THE IMPONDERABILIA OF EVERYDAY EXISTENCE

A true Diwali

My Diwali this year was a memorable one. We spent it at a cousin's place. I have never had a traditional Diwali celebration but this one was, even if by default. Since she had to go for a flight (she is an air hostess), we decided to stay home and relax. I was ready to cook up something I wouldn't normally make for anyone easily. With the cumbersome grocery shopping out of the way which required us to go from a shop at one end to another in the opposite lane, thanks to an absence of super markets even as we insist on calling ourselves developed, I was all set to make momos all by myself. But it completely skipped my mind that no meat shops would be open today so, try as much as I did, I had to make some last minute change in plan.

After two hours, I was serving dum aloo and puris to my company at home. I was especially proud of myself because my dish had turned out exactly as I had wanted it to. Unlike most people, who like theirs dry and hot, I was out to make a dum aloo which had some gravy and a mix of colours. In the evening, Dengyal's cousin cleaned the apartment, got the puja thali ready and made some kheer. I had never applied tilak on a Diwali night, neither had I celebrated it in its true spirit so this one was an experience to cherish. Towards the end of the evening, we played cards (for a very very short while), ordered some vegetarian take out (our noodles still had egg in them!) and listened to music. Yes, Diwali this year was a holiday well spent.

Now that this calendar year is fast coming to an end with yet another festival getting over, I am back in my hostel. It is extremely difficult getting back to your every day routine after a gap, be it for two days, a week or a month. I have a bad cold and headache since last night which makes matters even worse. I just hope I feel better soon enough.
