THE IMPONDERABILIA OF EVERYDAY EXISTENCE

A date with astrology

The last time I was home, I decided it was finally time to pay a visit to the local astrologer. This man is not a desperate shot in the dark by any means. He has won our faith and trust after proving his credentials over a period of ten years. The story of our faith in him goes something like this:

Many years ago, I had a cousin who had always received the best of everything. He went to the best school of those days and college was no different. Soon came a phase when he wanted to prove his capabilities, of standing on his two feet. I was a school girl then who didn’t know much about this cousin apart from the fact that we shared similar tastes in music and were both Ariens. One evening I heard from my teary eyed Mum that he had run away. No one had seen that one coming. Uncle had already consulted a host of contacts in every city to track his son down. My aunt, on the other hand, was a god fearing lady and running from monasteries to temples and mosques was what she knew best. Enter astrologer D (that is what I shall call him henceforth). He went through my cousin’s birth chart and told aunty not to worry. He was heading south towards the sea side right now and in a matter of five days would call home.

“That’s it”, I thought?

Here was a man who did not ask for any money to perform some fancy puja or sell some religious pendant that would do the trick. The most shocking part was when it actually worked. Agya did call home exactly after five days and yes, he was in southern India. This incident was only the beginning of many to come. Over the course of a few years, Mister D helped solve crazy cases. He gave deadlines for both promotions and failures and gave forecasts on prospective wives and husbands for many cousins. Each proved right and, to me, Mister D replaced the years of Carolyn Keene I had been reading. Out with Nancy Drew, in with Mister D.

(to be continued..)
