THE IMPONDERABILIA OF EVERYDAY EXISTENCE

Tears of joy

It seems like most of my posts in recent times have been about weddings. Yet again I am here to share a story about two weddings cramped in one day. The fact that the two venues were in opposite ends proved a brain teaser for us, me and a cousin. We did not know how to sequence. Thankfully, my parents were accompanying us so they decided to head south first.

The first wedding reception we attended was a celebration of the happy and long-overdue union of my sister's friends. They have been extremely nice to me during my visits to Kolkata so when the groom came to invite us for his wedding, I knew I had to be around for this one. It was a low key affair, and one I like best nowadays given all the unnecessary pomp and show following weddings. I also got to meet a few old friends after a long time. The intention was to stay there for a short while and then make a move for the second venue but we ended up staying there for a good two hours. I think the presence of my nephew and niece had something to do with this. Lex in his three piece suit and Choki in her traditional best.

The second wedding was a revelation, especially so for me. We reached the venue around 7pm. This is very late by Gangtok standards for us, not so much for my younger brother who has a habit of making late entries. So we decided to congratulate the couple straight away and then settle down for some drinks and snacks. As soon as the bride saw my cousin, who flew all the way from Mumbai for her wedding, she was in for a lovely surprise. Tears streamed down our cheeks, all three of us! I was surprised with myself moreso since I didn't see it coming. It started with the bride, followed by my cousin, after which I succumbed to the same emotion. My school friend was getting married!

We were notorious for giving crank calls. Me not so much but the other two would always find ways and means to extract landline numbers (sadly the era of mobile phones had not arrived yet). I joined them during a few occasions. The one person we would regularly call was a super senior who was extremely fair and shy. He did not seem so shy on the phone and spoke rather confidently with us. Information about what he ate for lunch, where he was waiting for a haircut etc. we had it all! It was only after I was in college and coincidently found this senior on orkut that I spilled the beans I had been meaning to spill for the longest time. He seemed thrilled and pleased to finally know who his secret admirers were. All these memories came rushing back as I kept staring at the newly married couple in the dias. Wow! It really means we are getting older and new chapters are being written.
