THE IMPONDERABILIA OF EVERYDAY EXISTENCE

Saying no to Piracy & Books

For someone who likes to believe in a lot of principles, I sure do indulge in some wholesale online piracy. Following along the footsteps of the students on campus, I don't know how I would have survived the last two and a half years here minus all the torrents. Watching movies was relatively easy in the United Kingdom. All I had to do was stream the same online, minus any fear of buffering. It is entirely the opposite in India. I should not be complaining much though because the internet speed back home in the hills is the real mood killer. Atleast here in the plains, I can still manage to watch youtube videos in a jiffy. Tonight, while I wait for the hourly load shedding to strike any minute, I am patiently waiting for a few more movies to download. With the Oscar nominations out, I have a long list of torrents staring back at me. The best ones are always the blue ray prints but those are the ones that are not easily available. My three movies tonight include Django unchained, Hotel Transylvania and Silver linings playbook.

Since my viva took place on the 7th, I have been really relaxed. Actually I may as well confess that since mid-December I haven't really been studying much. The bookmark seems to be permanently stuck in the second page of the constitution. Everyday I tell myself I will turn a few pages today. Mondays especially so. Yet so far things have remained static. Two days after my viva, I got a call from my supervisor asking me to submit copies of my first year marksheets at the School office for the final certificate. I was in my Centre the next day, eating samosas and chai at the canteen while waiting for the office staff to report for work. Just then a classmate, who happened to sit next to me, asked how my viva had gone and how I had been graded. I told him it had gone extremely well but I wasn't aware of my grades. Infact, I said, I did not even know we could enquire about our grades. So I went to the office, submitted the papers and asked the lady if I could know my grades.

She responded, "Haan kyun nahi, ek minute..... tumko A only mila hai".

When I heard I had an A in my dissertation, I wanted to scream with joy. I was expecting a B plus or an A minus at the most, but an A?!! There were a few quick calls and smses to my Dad, Dengyal, family and friends. After all the data collection, analyzing and writing, it feels really good to be rewarded well. No wonder I feel like I deserve this break from books right now. Unfortunately, I also know that now is not the time to indulge in such shenanigans. The last date for submission of the State Civils forms are long over and the dates for the upcoming premilinary examination will be announced any moment. I need to give myself a final push this summer and pray for positive results for the both of us.

2013, you better be the year I have been waiting for. Give me my moment, or rather moments. C'mon.
