THE IMPONDERABILIA OF EVERYDAY EXISTENCE

August 26, 2012

What's going on?

Ever since I stepped out of Sikkim, I have covered many miles, both geographically and metaphorically. What started off as a well intentioned decision to let the wandering mind settle down to a routine has turned out to be exactly the opposite. I got to see two new places this week, two states actually. I feel guilty about having to hide my whereabouts from my folks. Not that they would object but they would be worried. I guess sometimes a little lie is okay so far as it calms the listener.

I arrived in Guwahati, the gate way to the North-East, on a Saturday. The welcome was ugly. The shabby hostel arrangements had us shocked for the first few hours. Thankfully, we had a very close friend provide us with accommodation for what has now turned out to be a week's holiday. Had it been someone else, I may have felt a bit uneasy but this is different. Now that my supposedly favourite city, Delhi, was on the itinerary we didn't have a lot to check out in Guwahati therefore we made a weekend trip to Shillong. Once there, I was immediately struck by the lack of planning in the capital. Pedestrians scattered all over, especially in Police bazar, complete with street hawkers selling the most random of eatables from noodles to chana and the like. The following day we visited the ex-rainiest place on Earth. Yes, we were in Sohra, more popularly known as Cherrapunjee. The drive to Sohra was an absolute delight. I finally understood why this place is referred to as the "Scotland of the East". Ironically, rains were a no show on the day of our visit. Infact it never rained while we were in Shillong. I think the highlight of the day was the visit to Mawsmai cave. We weren't expecting an actual cave waiting to be explored. The walk, or rather the squeeze, from between the rocks was a worthy experience. There was another funny incident which made us laugh a lot but that shall not be shared with you today.
In the company of Mr. and Mrs. Das :D
Also, my brother seems to be on our heels ever since we said hello to Assam. He called us the very next day informing us about his arrival with the Uro team. We got a similar call while we were in Shillong as well. Both times we met him in his hotel so I am sure the players are wondering if we are fans on the go with our favourite team. I might have my differences with my younger sibling at home but seeing him here made my day. He seems much more responsible nowadays and responsible is good. I find a change in myself as well. My decisions are being taken as and when they come along or need to be made. I don't know what to expect from one day to the next. So far things have gone pretty well. Tomorrow I need to run an errand for a friend and beyond that I don't have a plan. Is this really the Cyden from yesteryears? All of a sudden I feel different. Good different.

Cheers.
