THE IMPONDERABILIA OF EVERYDAY EXISTENCE

August 15, 2012

Cheers to us!

The Independence day celebrations in Sikkim this year saw a much awaited change of weather. While previous Independence days have seen lesser attendance, today the story is a bit different. We had the sun greet us with a beautiful day. The entire stadium is packed. People are out to enjoy their holiday by taking part in the festivities and the widely anticipated football finale. Had it not been for a breakfast plan, I would have been in the stadium myself.

The first event of the day saw a female DSP lead the contingent this year. I may not personally know her but it was a proud moment for us Sikkimese, especially women. Over the years I have often repeated how the fairer sex seems to be excelling in every arena. Today I was witness to the same. The brass and pipe band, the all girls NCC contingent, the compere and the DSP I just spoke about -- they managed to bring a big smile on my face. They also left me wanting to do more, wanting to prove my worth to myself more than anyone else. I think our generation has some of the smartest females today. Often I tell my friends that what they are taking as a joke right now might come and hit them in the face many years hence. Men at the end of the day do have that slight ego and our men are no different here. Fast forward some twenty years and our bureaucracy will be headed by mostly women. Most of the competitive examinations taking place today have seen female candidates performing exceedingly well. Even the X and XII board examinations have a higher success rate among girls than boys.

This Independence day, our men better sit up and take notice. The female force is working its way up the ladder. For the better ofcourse. Cheers.
