Very often questions have been raised about domestic helps. I refrain from using the word servant here as I have certain reservations against its connotation. With all the rising crime in both cities and towns, the police have come up with an ingenious solution- individual verification. So if I am to hire a domestic help, it is important to get a routine background check done and also have his or her details submitted at the local police station for future reference.
Yesterday I saw a newsflash. A fourteen year old girl was raped and killed by a sixty five year old man in Thane, Mumbai. This isn't a one off news we hear of, but something that pops up every now and then. The unfortunate lass had turned up in place of her ailing mother at the old man's residence for the day's chores. With his wife and two sons gone out of station, he seems to have lost no time in violating and silencing the victim. Now I wonder if something can be done about this as well. Maybe the helpers too should have a sort of verification conducted of their employers. After all the threat seems to work both ways, doesn't it?
