THE IMPONDERABILIA OF EVERYDAY EXISTENCE

Let the games begin

CWG opening ceremony versus a Chelsea-Arsenal EPL clash.

The remote is in the hands of a bearded female tonight and she is surrounded by a host of similar species. A few others sit huddled next to each other behind the previous group, their dupattas sweeping the floor as the creaky old fan uses whatever energy it can to muster a barely there breeze in the hollow room. I sit on the floor in the far right corner. Clad in a red dress reaching up to my mid thighs, I am subject to questioning glares but of course I don't care two hoots about them.

The players are making their way into the stadium arena. The final country to enter the stadium is the host nation, India. Suddenly the whole crowd in the room lights up and I am witness to 'mawali' whistles and thunderous clapping. I am unperturbed by what I see or hear. All this while I am actually praying desperately for the Indian contingent to press fast forward. My mind is set on watching the important match. How come I was more passionate about a football league that takes place in some other country while my own patriotism suffers? Shame on you, I tell myself.

A few telephonic sources confirmed that Chelsea won with a final score of 2-0 tonight, while I lost by a margin of 30-1. Cheers.
