THE IMPONDERABILIA OF EVERYDAY EXISTENCE

First birthdays

Yesterday was a joyous ocassion for us all. It was my darling nephew Lexla's first birthday. I find it hard to believe that a year has gone by so fast, so soon. Having jumped to the category of adults long ago, I was more than happy to see the little ones having fun. The birthday boy was dressed up in a three piece, complete with Loafers. He was pepped up despite being ambiguous about the events around him. Meanwhile his sister, Choki, was having the time of her life with her friends from school. The girls were dancing to the latest chartbusters, humming entire lyrics side by side. My introduction to her friends started with one of them telling me, "Ma'am, she is so sexy". Had this been some seven years ago, I would have been surprised but not anymore. The upcoming generation is going to be a highly competitive and westernized lot -- and by this I mean not just materially as we all are. When we were growing up, we never heard of a McDonalds or a KFC, on the contrary these kids have it all. We progressed from cassettes to cds, cds to vcds, vcds to mp3 players, walkman, discman etc. The jump has been far and wide.

I have a strong hunch that because my nephew is such a well-behaved baby, my kid(s) are going to be all over the place. Everyday Lex comes by in the morning, spends all day and leaves with his mother in the evening. Accordingly, we arrange the shifts in the house. The days I am back early from work and my aunt has to go out for some chore, I take over. Taking care of him is a full time job and I dread the day he will start walking. My favourite Lex moment is right after he wakes up from his afternoon nap. The smile, the innocence on his face is enough to brighten anyone's day.

The proud parents
The all-girls gang
The last one offering a khada.
I truly cherish this opportunity to take care of him while I can. Someday he is going to grow up and not want us to take care of him but until the time he needs us, I am honoured to be one of his many care-takers.

Happy Birthday Lexla. May you have a healthy and blessed life ahead of you.
